The story

King's Night Amsterdam in Amsterdam

Koningsnacht, or King's Night, is the evening before King's Day, when Amsterdam's bars, clubs and public spaces fill with music and street celebration ahead of the following day's official festivities. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, April 26, the night before King's Day itself on Monday, April 27, the birthday of King Willem-Alexander.

For decades, the last day of April was fixed in the Dutch calendar as Queen's Day, a national holiday celebrating the birthday of Queen Juliana on April 30.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

King's Night functions as Amsterdam's unofficial warm-up to the country's biggest street party, with clubs, bars and impromptu open-air parties starting the celebration a full day early rather than waiting for King's Day itself

02

The mystery stays covered

The date shifted from the older Queen's Day, held every April 30 for Queen Juliana's birthday, to April 27 following King Willem-Alexander's accession after Queen Beatrix's 2013 abdication, a change that also moved the informal Night celebrations earlier into late April

03

The city starts moving

Because King's Day itself regularly draws crowd estimates as high as 1

04

The water draws everyone in

5 million people to Amsterdam, King's Night has become a way to spread the celebration, and the crowds, across two nights instead of one
