The story

Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen

Eurosonic Noorderslag, known as ESNS, is a four-day music showcase festival and conference held each January in Groningen. The first three nights, Eurosonic, present emerging European artists across more than 40 city-center venues, while the closing night, Noorderslag, has served as a barometer for new Dutch pop music since 1986.

Every January, as much of the Netherlands hunkers down for the coldest stretch of winter, the northern city of Groningen becomes the unlikely epicenter of European live music for four nights running.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

ESNS functions less like a conventional festival and more like a talent pipeline for European music, where an appearance can become a springboard toward major festival bookings and international touring later in the year

02

The mystery stays covered

Its scale is unusual for a showcase event, packing more than 250 artists into over 40 venues across a single compact city center within four nights, so attendees can catch a dozen or more acts in an evening simply by walking between stages

03

The city starts moving

The event pairs its public music program with an industry conference that draws bookers, journalists and label representatives from across Europe

04

The water draws everyone in

The closing Noorderslag night, dedicated entirely to Dutch artists, preserves a distinct national tradition within an otherwise pan-European lineup
