The story

Nijmegen Four Days Marches Festival in Nijmegen

The Vierdaagsefeesten is the free citywide festival that accompanies the International Four Days Marches, the world's largest organized walking event, held in Nijmegen each July. While roughly 46,000 walkers cover 30, 40 or 50 kilometers a day for four consecutive days, the surrounding city hosts more than 40 stages and over 1,200 performances for an estimated 1.5 million visitors.

The origins of the International Four Days Marches trace back to sporting events for army units held across the Netherlands between 1904 and 1908, organized to improve the physical condition of conscripted soldiers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few events pair elite endurance sport with a citywide free festival on this scale: the walking event itself dates to 1909, when the Dutch Association of Physical Education began organizing multi-day marches originally designed to improve soldiers' fitness, and it has been based in Nijmegen since 1925

02

The mystery stays covered

Around it, the Vierdaagsefeesten has grown into the largest freely accessible event in the Netherlands, turning the entire city center into a continuous outdoor festival for the duration of the walking event

03

The city starts moving

The walkers themselves, drawn from more than 75 countries, finish each day's route to crowds lining the streets, giving the festival an unusual atmosphere that combines genuine athletic achievement with straightforward street-party celebration
