The story

Auckland Marathon in Auckland

The Auckland Marathon is a late-October or early-November road race that crosses the Auckland Harbour Bridge, the first sporting event ever to do so when the modern annual race began in 1992. Offering distances from 5 kilometres to the full marathon plus a wheelchair event, it now draws more than 17,000 runners and walkers along a course through Devonport, over the bridge, and along Tamaki Drive to Victoria Park.

The Auckland Harbour Bridge carries tens of thousands of vehicles across the Waitemata Harbour every day, and for the rest of the year it is entirely closed to pedestrians and cyclists.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Auckland Marathon holds a genuine piece of New Zealand sporting history: when the modern annual event launched in 1992, it became the first sporting event ever permitted to cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge, a route still closed to competitive events at any other time

02

The mystery stays covered

Though sporadic marathons in Auckland date back to 1936, the current continuous event, conceived by 1974 Commonwealth Games athlete Rendell McIntosh and race director Paul Ryken, has run every year since, growing from roughly 3,000 entrants at launch to more than 17,000 across all distances today

03

The city starts moving

The course itself moves through several distinct Auckland neighbourhoods, starting in Devonport before crossing the harbour and finishing via Tamaki Drive, giving runners a genuine tour of the city's waterfront geography rather than a single repeated loop
