Oamaru Victorian Fete in Oamaru
The grand finale of Oamaru's Victorian Heritage Celebrations, the Victorian Fete fills the town's preserved limestone Victorian Precinct each November with penny-farthing racing, a street parade, a garden party and widespread period costume, drawing thousands of visitors to North Otago each spring for the occasion.
Oamaru's Victorian Precinct is built almost entirely from Oamaru limestone, a soft, pale local stone that made the town's nineteenth-century commercial buildings unusually easy to carve with decorative detail, and that architectural legacy is preserved today by the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust.
