The story

Crankworx Rotorua in Rotorua

Crankworx Rotorua is a mountain bike festival held at Skyline Rotorua and Whakarewarewa Forest, part of the international Crankworx World Tour that originated in Whistler, Canada, in 2004. Rotorua became a tour stop around 2014, and the festival's programme of downhill, slopestyle, dual slalom and pump track events is built in partnership with local mana whenua who hold rights over the forest land used.

Whakarewarewa Forest, on the edge of Rotorua, is best known to most New Zealanders for its towering stands of Californian redwood, planted in the early twentieth century as part of forestry experiments and now one of the region's most photographed natural landmarks.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rotorua is one of only a handful of cities worldwide to host a stop on the Crankworx World Tour, placing it alongside Whistler in an elite tier of international mountain biking venues, and the festival is often described within the tour as the spiritual home of Crankworx outside Whistler

02

The mystery stays covered

Its trails run through Whakarewarewa Forest, known for its redwood groves, on land where access depends on ongoing relationships with mana whenua including Ngati Whakaue, Tuhourangi and other local iwi and hapu groups, giving the festival a genuine partnership dimension with Maori landholders rather than treating the forest as a neutral backdrop

03

The city starts moving

Recent editions have combined the festival with official Downhill, Cross Country and Short Track national championships, adding a competitive selection dimension to what is otherwise a spectator-focused festival format
