The story

Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival in Taranaki

Run by the Taranaki Garden Trust since 2005 under the motto Real Gardens for Real People, the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival opens more than 40 everyday private gardens across the region each spring at a deliberately low two-dollar-per-garden entry fee for all festival visitors each year.

The Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival grew out of a deliberate decision by a group of Taranaki gardeners to formalise an alternative to the region's larger, more polished garden festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Taranaki Garden Trust was formed specifically to present real gardens created by real people, positioning the Fringe festival as the affordable, unpolished counterpart to the region's larger, more curated Centuria Taranaki Garden Festival, which runs concurrently under a separate organising trust

02

The mystery stays covered

Its two-dollar-per-garden pricing is a notably democratised model compared with typical garden-festival ticketing, and the roughly ten-day programme visits between 41 and 45 gardens depending on the year, ranging from modest suburban plots to larger rural properties
