Motatapu in Wanaka/Queenstown
Motatapu is an off-road multisport event in March crossing the private Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe high country stations between Wanaka and Arrowtown, opened to the public for this one weekend a year. Founded in 2005 with 1,000 competitors, it now offers five race formats including mountain biking, trail running and an ultra run, drawing around 4,000 participants.
For most of the year, the high country between Wanaka and Arrowtown is closed to the public, private farmland spread across the Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe stations and now part of the Mahu Whenua conservation area.
