The story

Festival Afrique du Rire Niamey in Niamey

Festival Afrique du Rire is a pan-African stand-up comedy festival touring Morocco, Niger, and Cote d'Ivoire, led by Moroccan-Ivorian comedian Oualas, with its sixth edition beginning around November 12 across the three countries including Niamey. Niamey separately hosts RIR a Niamey, whose seventh edition ran May 21-31, 2025 under the theme Faites rire pour sauver des vies, alongside the Awards du Rire Africain, launched in 2021.

Niamey occupies an unusual position within Africa's comedy scene: home to not one but two related, distinct comedy festivals that together have helped brand the city as a serious hub for humor on the continent.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Niamey has emerged as a hub within Africa's comedy scene, hosting two related but distinct festivals: the touring Festival Afrique du Rire, led by comedian Oualas and shared with Morocco and Cote d'Ivoire as a bridge linking North and Sub-Saharan Africa, and the homegrown RIR a Niamey, whose Awards du Rire Africain, launched in 2021, has been credited with helping establish the city as what regional press has called the capital of humor in Africa

02

The mystery stays covered

RIR a Niamey's seventh edition aimed to reach over 10,000 people with messages of peace, coexistence, solidarity, and tolerance delivered through humor, framing comedy as a vehicle for social cohesion rather than escapism

03

The city starts moving

These two festivals together reflect an unusually dense concentration of comedy infrastructure for a Sahelian capital
