The story

Sabre National Kokowa in Tahoua

Sabre National Kokowa is Niger's national traditional-wrestling championship, held annually in a rotating regional capital. The 46th edition ran December 19-28, 2025 at the Hamidine Maidare arena in Tahoua, marking 50 years since Kokowa's institutionalization in 1975. Over ten days, 128 wrestlers representing Niger's eight regions competed for the title King of the Arena in the Hausa folk-wrestling tradition.

Every December, Niger's eight regions send their best traditional wrestlers to compete for the title of King of the Arena at the Sabre National Kokowa, the country's national championship in Kokowa, the Hausa name for a form of folk wrestling practiced across Hausa communities in both Niger and northern Nigeria.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The 2025 edition carried special historical weight as the 50th anniversary of Kokowa's institutionalization as a national sport in 1975, marked under the theme 50 years of Kokowa: at the heart of Sovereignty, Patriotism, and the Refoundation of Niger

02

The mystery stays covered

Tahoua's role as host carries its own significance, since it was the first regional capital to host a traditional-wrestling championship after that 1975 institutionalization, making the city something of a spiritual home for the modern competition

03

The city starts moving

With 128 wrestlers, 16 drawn from each of Niger's eight regions, competing over ten days for the title King of the Arena, the tournament functions as a genuine national championship rather than a purely local or ceremonial contest, fought, organizers emphasize, in a spirit of brotherhood and respect
