Sabre National Kokowa in Tahoua

Sabre National Kokowa is Niger's national traditional-wrestling championship, held annually in a rotating regional capital. The 46th edition ran December 19-28, 2025 at the Hamidine Maidare arena in Tahoua, marking 50 years since Kokowa's institutionalization in 1975. Over ten days, 128 wrestlers representing Niger's eight regions competed for the title King of the Arena in the Hausa folk-wrestling tradition.

Every December, Niger's eight regions send their best traditional wrestlers to compete for the title of King of the Arena at the Sabre National Kokowa, the country's national championship in Kokowa, the Hausa name for a form of folk wrestling practiced across Hausa communities in both Niger and northern Nigeria.
