The story

Udiroko Festival Ado-Ekiti in Ado-Ekiti

Udiroko Festival is the founding festival of Ado-Ekiti, tracing back to around 1310 AD and the reign of Oba Awamaro, the first Ewi of Ado-Ekiti. Celebrated annually in August, it functions as the town's new year, marked by thanksgiving to the divine and to the Ewi's ancestors, followed by feasting, dancing and citywide merry-making across the kingdom.

Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State in southwestern Nigeria, dates its identity as a unified town to the reign of Oba Awamaro, the first Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, who is remembered as having established the kingdom around 1310 AD.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Udiroko is distinctive as one of only two festivals, alongside the Ogun festival, considered central enough to unite all Ado-Ekiti indigenes, both resident and in the diaspora, in a single shared observance

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than honoring a single deity, it commemorates the founding of the town itself under Oba Awamaro roughly seven centuries ago, giving it the character of a civic new year as much as a religious rite

03

The city starts moving

Every August, roads across Ekiti State are said to lead to Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, as citizens return home specifically for the occasion, and the reigning Ewi uses the platform to address the state of the kingdom
