Igue Festival Benin in Benin City
The Igue Festival, also called the King's Festival, is the most important annual ceremony of the Benin Kingdom in Edo State, celebrated between Christmas and New Year over roughly seven days. It centers on the Oba of Benin blessing his land and people, while also honoring the memory of past Obas.
Between Christmas and New Year, when much of Nigeria turns toward end-of-year travel and celebration, Benin City in Edo State observes a ceremony with roots reaching back to the fifteenth century.
