Malokun Festival Irele in Irele
Malokun Festival Irele honors Malokun, a sea deity revered by the Ikale and Ilaje Yoruba of Irele in Ondo State, whose name is said to derive from Umale Okun, spirit of the ocean. Local tradition holds Malokun a twin deity paired with a female counterpart called Ifara. The Oba and chiefs lead a thanksgiving procession from the palace to the shrine known as Oju Omalokun.
Along the Ilaje-Ikale coast of Ondo State, where the towns and creeks of Irele local government sit close to the Atlantic and its tributary rivers, the Malokun deity occupies a central place in local cosmology.
