Sango Koso Festival in Oyo
World Sango Festival, held annually in August at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, honors Sango, the thunder and fire deity remembered as the third king of the old Oyo Empire following his brother Ajaka. Rebranded from a local observance to an internationally attended World Sango Festival by the Oyo State government in 2013, it is now also marked by devotee communities in over forty countries.
Sango occupies a uniquely dual role in Yoruba tradition, remembered simultaneously as a historical figure and as one of the most powerful deities in the Yoruba pantheon.
