Ohrid Summer Festival in Ohrid
The Ohrid Summer Festival is North Macedonia's most prestigious international cultural event, founded August 4, 1961, and running each year from July 12 to August 20 in the Lake Ohrid city of Ohrid. Originally launched to promote Macedonian culture within Yugoslavia, the six-week program blends classical music, theatre and dance across venues including Ohrid's ancient amphitheatre, funded by the Ministry of Culture and having hosted artists such as Jose Carreras.
The Ohrid Summer Festival was founded on August 4, 1961, in the lakeside city of Ohrid, then part of socialist Yugoslavia, with the explicit purpose of promoting Macedonian culture within the wider Yugoslav federation.
