The story

Skopje Jazz Festival in Skopje

Skopje Jazz Festival is North Macedonia's leading jazz event, held every October in the capital since 1982. Over more than four decades it has hosted major international names such as Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter and BB King alongside emerging avant-garde acts. As part of the European jazz network, the festival mixes established stars with experimental programming across several venues in Skopje each autumn.

Skopje Jazz Festival began in 1982, at a time when jazz festivals of this scale were rare in the socialist Balkans, and it has run nearly every year since, making it one of the longest-established music festivals in North Macedonia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's standing comes from its notable guest list set against a small, non-commercial Balkan city

02

The mystery stays covered

Since 1982 it has drawn some of the most significant names in jazz history, including Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter and BB King, giving Skopje audiences access to performers more typically associated with major Western European or American venues

03

The city starts moving

Its membership in the European jazz network keeps the lineup connected to current avant-garde and contemporary jazz trends rather than relying only on legacy acts

04

The water draws everyone in

The combination of a long, continuous history through political and economic change in the region, and a programming philosophy that pairs household names with experimental musicians, distinguishes it from other regional festivals
