The story

Vodno-Matka Trail Marathon in Skopje/Matka

The Vodno-Matka Trail Marathon is a trail-running event first held in 2018, based at the Makedonsko Selo ethno-complex in Gorno Nerezi, Skopje. Offering Sprint (18K), Classic (30K) and Ultra (50K) distances, the roughly 75 percent unpaved course connects Mount Vodno with Matka Canyon through steep, technical terrain past old monasteries and churches, with the 2026 edition scheduled for April 5.

Skopje sits between two prominent natural features, Mount Vodno rising above the city and Matka Canyon carved by the Treska River to its southwest, both long popular with hikers and day-trippers from the capital.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This race distinguishes itself through its terrain and its connection of two of Skopje's most significant natural landmarks: Mount Vodno and Matka Canyon, joined by a single continuous trail course that is roughly 75 percent unpaved

02

The mystery stays covered

The steep, technical nature of the route sets it apart from road races in the region, demanding trail-specific skills such as navigating loose ground, elevation changes and narrow paths rather than sustained flat pace

03

The city starts moving

Three distance options, an 18K Sprint, a 30K Classic and a 50K Ultra, suit different experience levels, while the route's passage near old monasteries and churches adds historical interest beyond athletic challenge

04

The water draws everyone in

Recognition on both the ITRA and UTMB indexes gives it standing in the international trail-running circuit, drawing competitive and local runners alike
