Rota Blue Triathlon in Rota

The Rota Blue Triathlon is an annual multisport race held each November on the island of Rota in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, now past its nineteenth edition. Co-created by Kiyokazu Onishi and jointly organised by the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Rota Mayor's Office and Kiyokazu Fitness Club of Japan, it offers both a half-marathon-distance and an Olympic-distance course through Rota's scenic coastal terrain.

Each November, the island of Rota in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands hosts the Rota Blue Triathlon, an annual multisport race now well into its second decade that has become one of the CNMI's most recognised sporting events, particularly within Japan's triathlon community.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The event has built an unusually strong and specific following among Japanese endurance athletes, with organiser Kiyokazu Onishi's Japan-based fitness club drawing long-time competitors who return year after year specifically for the Rota course, making the triathlon a genuine annual pilgrimage for a dedicated segment of Japan's triathlon community

02

The mystery stays covered

Its dual-distance format, an A-type combining a 1

03

The city starts moving

5 km swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run with no time limit, and a B-type Olympic distance with a 2

04

The water draws everyone in

0 km swim, 90 km bike and 21 km run under an eight-hour cap, plus a team relay option for the A-type distance, gives the race flexibility for both serious and less experienced competitors

05

The old stones answer

Rota's small scale and pristine natural setting, largely undeveloped compared with Saipan, gives competitors a scenic, low-traffic race environment
