Finnmarkslopet in Alta
Finnmarkslopet is Europe's longest sled dog race, organized every year since 1981 and starting and ending in Alta, Norway. Its open class now covers roughly twelve hundred kilometers across the Finnmarksvidda plateau to Kirkenes and back, making it the second longest sled race in the world after Alaska's Iditarod.
Finnmarkslopet held its first race in 1981 with a single open class and just three competing teams, a modest beginning for what has since become the longest sled dog race in Europe and the second longest in the world after Alaska's Iditarod.
