The story

Oslo Marathon in Oslo

The Oslo Marathon has run annually, typically in September, since its debut in 1981. New York City Marathon founder Fred Lebow once took part and praised it as a model for other race organizers. With only about 80 metres of total elevation gain across a flat route through central Oslo and along the Oslofjord, it has earned a reputation as one of Norway's flattest and most accessible city marathons.

The Oslo Marathon has been run every year since its first edition in 1981, and in the decades since it has grown into something Norwegians sometimes only half-jokingly call the country's third national day, a description that captures how thoroughly the race has embedded itself into the city's annual rhythm each September.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Norwegian sporting events carry the cultural weight of the Oslo Marathon, sometimes called Norway's third national day

02

The mystery stays covered

Its credibility was cemented early when Fred Lebow, founder of the New York City Marathon, ran an early edition and held it up as a model for other organizers

03

The city starts moving

In 1982 Grete Waitz added to that reputation, setting an unofficial half marathon world record of 1:07:50 during the race

04

The water draws everyone in

The course has not always run as planned: in 1992 a navigation error by police outriders near Karl Johan sent the full marathon about a kilometre short

05

The old stones answer

With total elevation gain of only around 80 metres along a route hugging the Oslofjord through Frognerparken's Vigeland sculpture park, it remains one of the flattest city marathons in the country
