The story

Roros Winter Fair in Roros

Rorosmartnan, or Roros Winter Fair, is a historic market held annually from the second-to-last Tuesday of February through the following Saturday in the UNESCO-listed mining town of Roros. First officially held in 1854, it now draws seventy to eighty thousand visitors, opened each year by a prominent public figure.

Roros exists because of copper.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Norwegian markets carry as much documented history as Rorosmartnan, tracing back to the trading monopoly once held by the Roros Kobberverk copper works, a monopoly that collapsed through the 1700s and was abolished by 1842

02

The mystery stays covered

A royal resolution in 1853 established an official market from 1854, and by 1855 it already drew several thousand visitors from as far as Sweden, trading furs, grain, fish, linen, and horses under troops keeping order

03

The city starts moving

The market was actually abolished in 1877, with many assuming the new railway would make it obsolete, but the railway instead brought more visitors than ever, forcing a reversal
