The story

Trena Festival in Traena

Traenafestivalen is a music festival held each July on the islands of Sanna and Husoya in the remote Traena archipelago on Norway's Helgeland coast, reachable only by boat. Established in its current form in 2003, building on a smaller local festival tradition from 1978 to 1998, it draws several thousand visitors a year to nine stages, including a natural sea cave, and was once named Norway's festival of the year.

Traena had a festival tradition long before Traenafestivalen took its current shape.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Getting there is part of the experience: there is no bridge or airport link, so every visitor arrives by boat from Bodo, Stokkvagen, Nesna or Sandnessjoen to an island of a few hundred permanent residents that briefly hosts several thousand guests

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's best-known stage is Kirkhelleren, a natural sea cave used for concerts, including an early-morning set that has become a signature moment

03

The city starts moving

Past lineups have run from Timbuktu and Manu Chao to Sigrid, Aurora, Girl in Red and Kaizers Orchestra, and the festival was named Norway's festival of the year by the national concert organisers association in 2012 and later listed among Europe's best festivals by a major British newspaper

04

The water draws everyone in

Some local businesses earn a large share of their annual income across the festival's few days
