Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromso

The Midnight Sun Marathon is a road race held in Tromso each June around the summer solstice, timed so runners cross the finish line under a sun that never sets. Established in 1990 by the Midnight Sun Marathon Foundation, it is recognised by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races as the world's northernmost certified marathon, starting and finishing in the city centre and crossing the Tromso Bridge twice.

The Midnight Sun Marathon was established in 1990 by what became the Midnight Sun Marathon Foundation, built around a simple geographic fact: Tromso lies far enough north, at roughly 350 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, that the sun does not set at all in June, making it possible to hold a marathon that starts in the evening and finishes near midnight in full daylight.
