The story

Trondheim Jazz Festival in Trondheim

Trondheim Jazz Festival traces its roots to 1980, when the voluntary organisation JazzMazz filled the Samfundet venue with more than 1,700 visitors. Revived in 1994 and renamed Trondheim Jazz Festival in 1998, it became a foundation in 2001. Held each May across theatres, cafes, bars and arts centers citywide, it spans jazz's past, present and future forms over about a week.

Trondheim Jazz Festival did not begin as an institution with a fixed name or a formal structure.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What began in 1980 as a single JazzMazz-organised evening that packed Samfundet with over 1,700 visitors ran through 1987, then lay dormant until 1994, when Bjørn Krokfoss, Trond Kopperud and Ernst Wiggo Sandbakk, working as AS Tre Trommeslagere alongside Trondheim Jazzforum, revived it

02

The mystery stays covered

Renamed Trondheim Jazz Festival in 1998 and formalised as a foundation in 2001, the festival has since become less about one flagship stage than about turning the city itself, its theatres, cafes, bars and arts centers, into a week-long jazz venue each May

03

The city starts moving

Programming spans the genre's historical forms to its most experimental edges, and the festival has built a reputation as a launchpad for young musicians, including a national arena for high school and university-age performers
