The story

Ekstremsportveko in Voss

Ekstremsportveko, known locally as Veko, is billed as the world's largest extreme sports festival, held every year in late June in Voss, Norway. Founded in 1998 by four local outdoor clubs, it fills a week with competitions, demonstrations, and concerts spanning base jumping, whitewater rafting, paragliding, skydiving, climbing, BMX, and more, drawing athletes and spectators to Voss's mountains, lakes, and rivers.

Ekstremsportveko was founded in 1998 by Einar Raa Nilsen, Frode Solbakk, Oyvind Kindem, and Even Rokne, who brought together four existing Voss sports clubs, Skydive Voss, Voss Hang- and Paragliding Klubb, Voss Elveklubb, and Voss Active, around a shared idea: that the terrain surrounding Voss was too good for adventure sports to leave underused.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Ekstremsportveko grew out of four Voss-based clubs, Skydive Voss, Voss Hang- and Paragliding Klubb, Voss Elveklubb, and Voss Active, whose founders believed the dramatic terrain around Voss, mountains, fjords, lakes, and rivers within a small radius, deserved a festival built around using it rather than simply admiring it

02

The mystery stays covered

What began in 1998 as a small, idealistic gathering has grown into an international meeting point where world records have been set and major championships staged

03

The city starts moving

Its defining trait is sheer range: in a single week, competitions and demonstrations cover base jumping, bungee jumping, paragliding, skydiving, wind tunnel flying, whitewater rafting, freeride kayaking, climbing, BMX, skateboarding, windsurfing, kiting, and surfing
