The story

Al Wusta Winter in Haima and Al Wusta wilayats

Al Wusta Winter is a governorate-wide festival spanning the wilayats of Haima, Duqm, Mahut and Al Jazir in central Oman's Al Wusta Governorate, near the Empty Quarter. Running from January through March, it features camel racing, a camel beauty pageant, a shooting competition, traditional markets and heritage events, positioning the desert governorate as an emerging tourism destination.

Al Wusta is Oman's least densely populated governorate, a stretch of desert running along the edge of the Rub al Khali, the vast sand sea known in English as the Empty Quarter, where Bedouin communities have historically lived a more mobile, camel-centred existence than in the mountainous or coastal parts of the country.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Al Wusta sits along the edge of the Rub al Khali, or Empty Quarter, one of the largest sand deserts on Earth, giving the festival a genuinely remote desert backdrop compared to more accessible coastal events

02

The mystery stays covered

Its programme includes a Muzayna camel beauty pageant, a distinctly Gulf Arabian tradition judging camels on physical traits prized in Bedouin culture, alongside more familiar camel racing, a shooting competition and traditional markets

03

The city starts moving

Organised under the Governor's office and Sheikh Ahmed bin Muslim Al Kathiri, the festival also folds in Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr programming when the dates align, and is explicitly promoted as supporting small and medium enterprises while showcasing what organisers describe as authentic Omani identity in one of the country's least-visited regions
