The story

Salalah Frankincense Festival in Salalah/Al Baleed

The Salalah Frankincense Festival, also promoted as Frankincense Season, runs each year in late November and early December at Al Baleed Archaeological Park, one of four sites making up Oman's UNESCO Land of Frankincense World Heritage listing. It features live demonstrations of traditional frankincense processing, market re-enactments, boat rides and tree planting.

Long before oil, Dhofar's wealth came from trees: specifically, the Boswellia sacra trees that grow wild in the region's arid hills and produce the resin known as frankincense, harvested by scoring the bark and collecting the hardened sap.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Al Baleed sits within the Land of Frankincense, a UNESCO World Heritage listing that also covers Samharam Archaeological Park, the Wubar site and the Wadi Dokah nature reserve where wild frankincense trees still grow, giving the festival a direct connection to the trade that shaped Dhofar's ancient economy for millennia

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival includes live demonstrations of traditional frankincense-product manufacturing, a children's programme called The Little Trader, exhibitions from Omani perfume and frankincense companies, boat rides on the adjoining Khor Al Baleed lagoon, and a market re-enactment recreating how frankincense was historically bought and sold

03

The city starts moving

A recent edition marked the site's UNESCO inscription with the planting of 100 frankincense trees in Wadi Dokah, tying the celebration back to the resource that gives the festival its name
