The story

Jashan-e-Chitral in Chitral

Jashan-e-Chitral is a week-long cultural festival held from 15 to 22 September in Chitral, showcasing traditional sports and performances of the Hindukush and Karakoram mountain communities, revived after two decades by the Chitral Association for Mountain Area Tourism to keep older customs practiced and visible to visitors.

Chitral's festival calendar is unusually crowded for a single mountain district, with Jashan-e-Qaqlasht drawing on more than two thousand years of history each April in Bunni and the Kalasha valleys running their own seasonal Uchal, Chilimjusht and Choimus celebrations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike the older Jashan-e-Qaqlasht, a separate, roughly 2,000-year-old festival held each April on the flat terrain of Bunni in Upper Chitral, Jashan-e-Chitral is a September event that had lapsed for about twenty years before being revived through CAMAT, the Chitral Association for Mountain area Tourism

02

The mystery stays covered

Its week-long length is unusual for the region, giving it room to combine traditional sports with a fuller program of cultural activities representing communities across the wider Hindukush and Karakoram range rather than a single valley
