Ginani Festival Hunza in Hunza

Ginani is Hunza and Nagar's summer solstice harvest festival, held on 21 June, celebrating that crops have survived the growing season, with music, dance, polo, tug-of-war and a special dish called Dirum Pitti shared across the community in Altit, Baltit and Aliabad, Hunza's historic centers of power.

Long before Hunza became known internationally for the Karakoram Highway and its fruit orchards, the valley's survival depended on a much narrower margin: whether the summer's harvest would be enough to see families through winter in one of the most food-insecure corners of the high Karakoram.
