The story

National Folk Festival Lok Mela in Islamabad

Lok Mela is Pakistan's largest annual folk festival, organized since the 1970s by the cultural institution Lok Virsa at its Shakarparian complex in Islamabad. Over roughly ten days each November, provincial pavilions bring together master artisans, folk musicians, and regional cuisines from all four provinces plus Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

Since 1974, Lok Virsa, formally the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage, has operated as Pakistan's dedicated institution for documenting and promoting the country's folk culture, an area that might otherwise be overshadowed by the country's political and religious life in public discourse.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Lok Mela is organized directly by Lok Virsa, the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage established in 1974, giving the festival an institutional mandate to preserve and platform folk culture rather than functioning as a purely commercial fair

02

The mystery stays covered

Its structure around provincial pavilions, each representing Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir, makes it one of the only events in Pakistan built explicitly to showcase the country's full regional and ethnic diversity side by side, under a shared theme of unity in diversity

03

The city starts moving

Master artisans working in traditional crafts, from truck art to Sindhi block printing, demonstrate their techniques directly to visitors rather than simply selling finished goods
