The story

Kalam Festival in Kalam Valley

The Kalam Festival, also widely known as the Swat Summer Festival, is a week-long July or August event in Kalam and nearby Mahodand in Upper Swat, launched in 2010 to restore tourism after years of militancy in the valley, and now organized largely by the provincial tourism department.

In 2007, militancy closed off Swat's hotels and emptied its famous river valleys of the tourists who had once called it the Switzerland of Pakistan.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is the same annual event marketed under two names: Wikipedia and most Pakistani press describe the Kalam Festival, Kalam Mela and Swat Summer Festival as one gathering, organized jointly by the Pakistan Army and the Swat Hotels Association starting in 2010, later taken up by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Department

02

The mystery stays covered

Its purpose was explicitly to signal that peace had returned to Swat after the 2007 to 2009 conflict, and to pull visitors back to Kalam's pine forests and the alpine lake at Mahodand, 10,500 feet up

03

The city starts moving

The week-long format, mixing paragliding and jeep rallies with handicraft stalls, was built specifically to fill hotels during Pakistan's hot summer months
