The story

Uchal Kalash Festival in Kalash Valleys

Uchal is the Kalash community's late-summer harvest festival, held from around August 20 across the Chitral valleys of Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir. Over three days, communities give thanks for the wheat and barley harvest with singing, dancing, and a procession to the high plateau of Balangkuru.

By late August, the wheat and barley that Kalash farmers planted earlier in the year has been brought in from the terraced fields of Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir, three narrow valleys in Chitral that are home to Pakistan's Kalash minority.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Where Chilam Joshi in spring marks the start of the milk season, Uchal closes out the agricultural year, giving the Kalash calendar a seasonal bookend rooted in livestock and crop cycles rather than the Islamic or Gregorian calendars used elsewhere in Pakistan

02

The mystery stays covered

Its centerpiece procession to the high plateau at Balangkuru, where prayers are offered before a night of dancing, sets it apart from the valley-floor gatherings of other Kalash festivals

03

The city starts moving

Corn, buttermilk, and cheese made specifically for the occasion mark Uchal as a harvest and livestock thanksgiving distinct from the fertility and courtship focus of the spring festivals
