The Shandur Polo Festival brings freestyle polo teams from Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan to Shandur Pass, a 3,700-metre plateau in the Hindu Kush known as the world's highest polo ground. Held each July since 1936, the three-day tournament pairs no-holds-barred mountain polo with folk music, dancing, and a tented festival camp.

At just under 3,700 metres, the Shandur Pass sits where the Hindu Kush folds into the western edge of the Karakoram, a natural grass plateau so remote that reaching it means a long mountain drive from either Chitral or Gilgit.
