The story

Sibi Mela in Sibi

Sibi Mela, formally the Horse and Cattle Show Sibi, is Balochistan's signature annual fair, held in the desert town of Sibi since 1885 under British administrator Robert Sandeman. The multi-day event combines a livestock market and breed competitions with tent pegging, camel races, tribal handicraft displays, and folk performances.

Sibi sits in a low, flat stretch of Balochistan known for some of the highest temperatures recorded anywhere in Pakistan, an unlikely setting, on the face of it, for one of the country's oldest and most enduring annual fairs.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sibi Mela's origins predate its formal 1885 organization, with some accounts tracing tribal gatherings at Sibi back to the barter economy of the 14th century, when the town served as a seasonal trading hub for tribesmen conducting livestock transactions across Balochistan

02

The mystery stays covered

Its formalization under British political agent Robert Sandeman, and the subsequent government grant that sustained it, gave the fair an institutional continuity across more than a century, making it one of Pakistan's longest-running organized public events

03

The city starts moving

The combination of a working livestock market with equestrian sports such as tent pegging and buzkashi, alongside displays of Baloch tribal dress and handicrafts, ties the fair directly to the pastoral and tribal economy of Balochistan rather than presenting a purely staged cultural show
