The story

Yabous Arabic Music Festival in East Jerusalem

The Yabous Cultural Centre, founded in East Jerusalem in 1995, runs an annual performing-arts program known as the Jerusalem Festival, documented in editions from at least 2011 through 2023. Rather than a music-only event, it combines Arabic music concerts with theatre, dance, and circus performances at Yabous venues including the Faisal Husseini Hall.

Yabous Cultural Centre was formed in East Jerusalem in 1995, when artists and cultural entrepreneurs including Suhail Khoury, Raed Saadeh, Dalia Habash, Jack Persikian, Yacoub Abu Arafeh, and Mazen Bazbaz set out to create an institution dedicated to performing arts in the city.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Yabous was formed by artists and cultural figures including Suhail Khoury, Raed Saadeh, Dalia Habash, Jack Persikian, Yacoub Abu Arafeh, and Mazen Bazbaz, taking its name from Yabous, the Jebusite name for ancient Jerusalem

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 2018 edition, Sounds of Freedom, marked the centre's 23rd anniversary and the opening of the Faisal Husseini Hall, pairing nightly concerts with a Palestinian Circus School production and an exhibition on the centre's history

03

The city starts moving

Because it operates inside East Jerusalem, the festival has at times been postponed, including in 2017, reflecting the access and permit constraints that periodically affect Palestinian cultural programming in the city
