Festival del Manito Ocueno in Ocu
Held during the second week of August in Ocu, Herrera province, this festival celebrates the Ocueno identity built around the greeting manito, meaning little hand or brother, exchanged when locals shake hands and say ta la manito. Formally established in 1967 and declared a National Folkloric Festival in 1999, it features mejorana dance and the tamarind duel.
Ocu, a small town in Herrera province on the Azuero peninsula, had been holding informal seasonal celebrations for generations before a group of local educators decided in 1967 to give those traditions formal structure.
