National Kenu and Kundu Festival in Alotau

The National Kenu and Kundu Festival, held in Alotau each November, celebrates the seafaring culture of Milne Bay Province through outrigger canoe, kenu, races and kundu drum performances. Alotau sits at the heart of the Massim cultural region, known for the kula ring exchange system that linked island communities across the province long before European contact.

Milne Bay Province occupies the easternmost tip of mainland Papua New Guinea and the scatter of islands beyond it, a geography of more than six hundred islands, about a hundred sixty inhabited, spread across a vast area of sea compared to a comparatively small area of land.
