Goroka Show in Goroka

The Goroka Show is Papua New Guinea's best known cultural gathering, held each September in the Eastern Highlands capital of Goroka near the national Independence Day. Around 100 tribal groups converge to perform sing-sing dances in elaborate decoration, a tradition that began in 1956 and remains the country's largest cultural event.

In the years after the Second World War, Australian colonial administration in the highlands of what is now Papua New Guinea relied heavily on kiaps, patrol officers who worked to establish government presence, resolve disputes, and reduce the intertribal warfare that had long shaped highland social life.
