Central Province Hiri Festival in Port Moresby

The Hiri Festival, commonly known as Hiri Moale, fills Port Moresby's Ela Beach each September with lagatoi canoe races, traditional dancing and the Hiri Hanenamo pageant. It commemorates the hiri, the long trading voyages Motu sailors once made westward along the coast to exchange clay pots for sago, timed to coincide with Papua New Guinea's Independence Day.

Long before Port Moresby became Papua New Guinea's capital, the Motu people who lived along this stretch of coast faced a problem written into their landscape: the dry season here is harsher than almost anywhere else in the country, and the ground rarely gives enough sago palm to feed a village through it.
