Hela Wigmen Festival in Tari
The Hela Wigmen Festival centers on the Huli people of the Tari basin, whose men grow and train their own hair for years inside dedicated wig schools to produce ceremonial wigs decorated with everlasting daisies and bird-of-paradise plumes, worn with red and yellow face paint at gatherings held around Tari.
In the Tari basin of what is now Hela Province, becoming a Huli man in the fullest ceremonial sense has traditionally meant years of preparation that has nothing to do with warfare or wealth and everything to do with hair.
