Trobriand Kula Festival in Trobriand Islands
The Trobriand Islands are the historic center of the Kula ring, the ceremonial exchange system in which shell valuables circulate between island communities across Milne Bay Province, a practice made famous in anthropology by Bronislaw Malinowski; a public festival referencing Kula would draw on this documented system alongside other well-known Trobriand traditions like war-canoe racing and yam harvest celebration.
When the Polish-British anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski lived among the Trobriand Islanders in the early twentieth century, he documented a practice that would go on to become one of the foundational case studies in modern anthropology: the Kula ring, a system in which two types of shell valuables, red necklaces and white armbands, circulate in opposite directions around a wide loop of island communities across what is now Milne Bay Province.
