Named for Tumshucaico, a Late Preceramic monumental site just north of Caraz dated to roughly 2500 BC, this cultural festival celebrates a 'living heritage' connection between the archaeological site and present-day Caraz, capital of Ancash's Huaylas province and self-described gateway to the Callejon de Huaylas.

Just north of Caraz, in the Ancash region's Callejon de Huaylas valley, the mounded platforms of Tumshucaico, also spelled Tumshukaiko or Tumshukayko, rise as much as 50 meters above the surrounding terraces, the visible remains of a monumental complex researchers now place in the Late Preceramic period, roughly 2500 BC, centuries before the rise of the better-known Chavin culture.
