The story

Inti Raymi Cusco in Cusco

Inti Raymi is Cusco's reenactment of the Inca Empire's most important ceremony, honoring Inti, the sun god, at the June winter solstice. Performed each June 24 at Qorikancha, the Plaza de Armas, and the hilltop fortress of Sacsayhuaman, the festival combines Quechua ceremonial language, Inca-inspired costume, and processional theater, drawing thousands of visitors to Cusco every year.

Every June 24, as the Southern Hemisphere reaches its shortest day, Cusco turns its main square and its Inca fortress into a stage for a ceremony that predates the Spanish conquest by more than a century.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Inti Raymi is staged on the same ground where the Inca court once gathered, and its script draws directly on the chronicles of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, who described the original nine-day ceremony of thanksgiving to Pachamama and Inti

02

The mystery stays covered

Banned under Spanish colonial rule after 1535, the festival was reconstructed in 1944 by Faustino Espinoza Navarro using Quechua-speaking performers, and that 1944 revival remains the basis for today's production

03

The city starts moving

More than eight hundred performers in woven costume take part, moving between three historic sites in a single afternoon, making it one of the largest live historical reenactments in South America
