The story

Lima 42K Marathon in Lima

The Lima 42K is Peru's flagship road marathon, run through the streets of the capital since its first edition on May 21, 2009, when Kenyan runner Anthony Mbithi Mukuthi and Bolivian runner Carla Velázquez won the inaugural men's and women's titles. Alongside the Lima Half Marathon, it holds World Athletics' Elite label, the only such endorsement for a 42-kilometer race in Peru.

When the Lima Marathon first sent runners through the capital's streets on May 21, 2009, it introduced Peru to a race built specifically to meet the certification standards of what was then the IAAF, now World Athletics.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

World Athletics' Elite label is the marathon's defining credential: alongside the Lima Half Marathon, it is one of only two Peruvian races carrying that endorsement, and as of 2025 the Lima 42K is, together with the Marathon de Cali in Colombia, one of just two Elite-label marathons anywhere in South America

02

The mystery stays covered

That international certification pulls competitive fields from East Africa and across the Americas to race against Peru's own distance runners on a coastal urban course, while thousands more compete in the accompanying 21-kilometer and 10-kilometer events

03

The city starts moving

The race has run under shifting sponsor names over the years, including Adidas Life Lima 42K, reflecting its standing as the country's most commercially prominent running event
