Guling-Guling Festival in Paoay

On the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, Paoay holds Guling-Guling, a centuries-old blessing ritual introduced by a Spanish friar in which a priest marks foreheads with rice-flour paste crosses at Paoay Church before a day of sanctioned pre-Lenten merrymaking. The ritual dates back to the 16th century and Fray Esteban Ortiz's original blessing of the townspeople.
