The story

Warsaw Marathon in Warsaw

The Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon, first run in 1979 as the Marathon of Peace, is Poland's oldest annual marathon, held the last Sunday of September and drawing over nine thousand finishers past Warsaw's Old Town and rebuilt postwar city landmarks each autumn without interruption for decades.

Poland's marathon culture begins, by most accounts, in Warsaw.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Founded by journalists Tomasz Hopfer and Jozef Wegrzyn with coach Zbigniew Zaremba, the race has carried sponsor names including PZU and now Nationale-Nederlanden, and belongs both to the Crown of Polish Marathons circuit alongside Debno, Krakow, Poznan, and Wroclaw, and to the eight-marathon European Marathon Classics series

02

The mystery stays covered

It qualifies as an Abbott World Marathon Majors Age Group event for runners over forty, and its companion race weekend includes the Warsaw 10K, a handbike marathon, a kids' mini-marathon, a Warsaw Half Marathon, a relay marathon, and dedicated Independence Run and Warsaw Dog Run events, making it a genuinely multi-event weekend rather than a single race
