The story

Jazz on the Odra in Wroclaw

Jazz nad Odra, running in Wroclaw since 1964, is one of Poland's oldest jazz festivals, built around a competition format that launched the careers of major Polish jazz figures including violinist Zbigniew Seifert and saxophonist Wlodzimierz Nahorny across six decades of continuous annual programming and growth.

Jazz nad Odra traces its roots to 1957, when Wroclaw students organized a jazz-band review that, by 1964, had grown into a dedicated festival organized through the ZSP student union and staged largely out of the Wroclaw club Palacyk on Kosciuszki Street.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Originating from a 1957 student jazz-band review and organized until 1989 by the ZSP student union alongside Wroclaw's Palacyk club, the festival opened its first edition alongside a jazz photography and graphics exhibition curated by Jazz monthly editor Jozef Balcerak, tying visual art to the music from the very start

02

The mystery stays covered

Its competition format has served as a genuine launchpad, giving early recognition to violinist Zbigniew Seifert and saxophonists Wlodzimierz Nahorny and Tomasz Szukalski before they became major names in Polish jazz

03

The city starts moving

The festival's success spawned imitators across Poland, including Jazz nad Warta in Poznan and Jazz nad Baltykiem in Gdansk, making it the clear originator of a wider format rather than a follower of any other event
