Sao Joao de Braga is Braga's Midsummer festival, peaking on the night of June 23 into June 24 around the ancient cult of Saint John the Baptist. One of Portugal's oldest surviving versions of the tradition, it centers on fire, grilled sardines, an international parade of giant gigantones and cabecudos figures, and weeks of concerts and markets across the city.

Long before Sao Joao became a city-wide street party, Braga already had a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, with documentary references placing one in the city from around 1150.
