The story

Bons Sons Festival in Cem Soldos

Bons Sons is a community-run festival dedicated to Portuguese music, staged inside the village of Cem Soldos near Tomar, where streets, squares, and residents' own homes become concert venues and makeshift taverns. Organized since 2006 by the local Sport Clube Operario de Cem Soldos, it has shifted to a biennial schedule from 2026 to protect the volunteer-heavy community behind it.

Cem Soldos is a village of roughly 700 people near Tomar, in central Portugal, and for a few days every one or two years it becomes something else entirely: a festival that exists only because its own residents agree to turn their homes into venues.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Bons Sons is built on a genuinely unusual model: rather than staging concerts at a purpose-built venue, the festival takes over Cem Soldos itself, a village of roughly 700 people near Tomar, turning private homes into taverns, community buildings into stages, and the streets into the festival grounds

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized entirely by the local sports club, Sport Clube Operario de Cem Soldos, it relies on around 400 local volunteers plus another 100 from outside the area each edition, and the festival is dedicated exclusively to Portuguese music rather than international bookings

03

The city starts moving

After running annually for roughly a decade following its 2006 launch, organizers announced a return to a biennial schedule from 2026 onward, to protect the long-term sustainability of a community that rebuilds its own village into a festival every time
