The story

Madeira Atlantic Festival in Funchal

The Atlantic Festival fills every Saturday in June with an international fireworks competition over Funchal Bay, where teams from countries such as Canada, China, Ukraine and Portugal compete with themed pyromusical shows. Alongside the fireworks, a month-long programme adds circus performances, multimedia shows and a bread fair.

Funchal is already known internationally for one night of fireworks: its New Year's Eve display over the bay has been recognised by Guinness World Records as among the largest in the world, taking advantage of the natural amphitheatre formed by the city's hillsides rising steeply from the harbour.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Funchal's bay and steep amphitheatre-shaped hillside give the Madeira International Fireworks Competition a natural viewing arena found in few other cities, and the festival structures itself as a direct competition rather than a single display: on four separate Saturdays in June, a different country stages its own themed, music-synchronised fireworks show, with past and confirmed participants including Canada, China, Ukraine and Portugal, each vying for the honour of designing Madeira's end-of-year fireworks show

02

The mystery stays covered

That competitive format, repeated weekly across a full month rather than compressed into one night, is unusual among firework festivals worldwide and turns the bay into a recurring monthly spectacle rather than a once-a-year event
